Nijo Castle, Kyoto.

Nijo Castle rocks and pond

Built in 1603 as the official residence of a Shogun. It is a compound of beautiful buildings and many gardens surrounded by stone walls,
thick gates and a moat. The gardens contain many wonderful stones arranged in several styles.

Ginkaku-ji, Kyoto.

The Temple of the Silver Pavilion was built by 8 year old Shogun, Yoshimasa. The temple was never covered with silver as intended.
This garden is also know for the mound of white sand called Kogetsudai, or Moon Viewing Dias.

Kinkaku-ji, Kyoto.

Not to be confused with Ginkaku-ji, this is the Golden Pavilion. Beautiful gardens built around the pavilion set on edge of “Mirror Pond”.

A public park in downtown Kumamoto City. Kumamoto En in San Antonio was designed using elements found in this garden and many from
Katsura

Daisen-in, Kyoto.


Daisen-in was constructed on the grounds of
Daitoku-ji Temple Complex. It is well known for its karesansui and much symbolism.

The Byodo-in temple main building is almost 1000 years old. Its architecture resembles a phoenix taking flight.

Heian Jingu temple architecture is impressively detailed and beautiful. The gardens are
divided into four sections surrounding a beautiful lake.

The Moss Temple, Saiho-ji is a green refuge designed by Soseki.
It was the inspiration for Ginkaku-ji.

Koto-En is famous for its moss and maple landscapes is beautiful in all seasons. Created for the warrior and tea master, Hosokawa, the family shrine is
located here. It is also home for two famous tea houses, the Shoko-ken and Horai.
